Happy Fight Procrastination Day!

6 Sep

Oh boy, I didn’t do very well trying to fight procrastination today, but I was busy pretty much all day from 9am-9:30pm!  Today’s holiday comes right after my good friend’s mother, Heide, lamented about procrastination.  So how can you effectively fight off the evils of procrastination?  For starters, you can go see Jorge Cham’s talk “The Power of Procrastination.”

If you aren’t lucky enough to live near a University he’ll be visiting, you can try out some of these tips.

For me, I try to figure out what time I work best doing certain tasks.  For instance, I prefer to write papers and grant proposals first thing in the morning.  Ideas are fresh in my mind and I’ve got plenty of energy.  I save more mundane things like scheduling and stats for night time in front of the tv.

Procrastination isn’t just bad b/c now you’re working under pressure to get that thing you have to get done, done, but it also has been linked to other problems in self-regulation.  This Psychology Today article reports that procrastinators can also have troubles with alcohol and other drugs of abuse.  Procrastination can also lead to increased insomnia (all those all-nighters) which can eventually lower your immune system’s ability to fight off germies.  Yikes.

So celebrate Fight Procrastination Day early and often! (Not tomorrow!)
