Happy National Sponge Cake Day!

23 Aug

Not Sponge Bob, Sponge Cake!

What the hell has gotten Sponge Bob so excited?  I know what.  It’s National Sponge Cake Day!!  Anyone who knows me knows that I love cake.  I’m really not particular about my cake, though I don’t really care for german chocolate cake because it has coconut in it, and I don’t like coconut.  But I digress.  As Marie Antionette might have said, “If the people have no bread, let them eat cake.

Sponge cakes are so named due to their spongy-like texture.  They are thought to be the first type of cake made without yeast, so in order to bake one, you have to be talented enough to trap air while beating the eggs which makes the cake rise.  The lack of yeast makes them great for celebrating Passover.  Yay Passover cake!

And now for some random facts about cake: did you know that the origin of cake dates back to ancient Macedonia?  There are so many different types of cake varying in texture and density that it would be impossible to name them all.    But you can check out this list here.  Cheesecake is sometimes debated as to whether it is really cake.  It contains little to no flour and instead is made up of a custard-like cheesy mixture, so some people consider it a custard pie.  I once tried to make an ice cream variety Bombe Alaska, but it sort of failed miserably.  And finally, here is a video by Cake:

What a creative way to celebrate the day! I couldn’t think of anything at 10:30 at night so I used a bday, instead.
